Laos MapLand-locked Laos is the forgotten country of South-East Asia. In former times the country was known as Lane Xang or the Land of a Million Elephants and even today elephants can still be found living wild and working in its great forests. Laos is a country where visitors can really escape from the stresses of modern life and step back into the calm of a world dominated by Buddhism.

Laos shares borders with Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and China. The mighty Mekong River flows into Laos from China in the far north and out into Cambodia in the far south. The capital Vientiane, and the former mountain kingdom of Luang Prabang, are the two main centres visitors usually head for.

Vientiane, the sleepy capital city, is the point of arrival for most visitors to Laos. Despite being the country's largest city, Vientiane has a population of less than 500,000 and there is a timeless feel to the dusty streets, riverside cafes and ancient temples of this beguiling city.

One of the highlights for visitors to Laos is the former royal capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang in the north of the country. There is little traffic on the streets of Luang Prabang and monks in orange robes carrying black umbrellas to shade themselves from the sun are a familiar sight. Daily flights link Vientiane and Luang Prabang.
