Who should go?
Located on a hilltop with sweeping views of Thailand, Laos and Burma, and its own elephant camp, the Anantara Golden Triangle is almost a destination in itself. It is everything a luxurious retreat should be.
If your idea of a holiday is sipping G&Ts while gazing at the jungle bathed in mist and history then this is the hotel for you. If you like to mix your adventure travel with lazy spa treatments and canapes this is the hotel for you.
The Anantara is definitely more than a bed so make sure your have enough time or your itinerary is not to full. You should spend a good three nights in order to visit al the main attractions and still have time to enjoy the hotel.
When to go?
Chiang Rai gets very hot and sometimes hazy in late March and April. The cool season starts in late October and the period from November to February is regarded as the best time to visit the north of Thailand.
However, once the rains have arrived in early May it can be very pleasant through most of the wet season with the occasional tropical storm invigorating the sense of jungle and adventure. Our advice is to travel in early October when the rice in the paddy fields is that perfect shimmering emerald you see in the brochures and you can take advantage of low season rates.
Where is it?
Go as far north as you can right to the top of Thailand and you wil find the Anantara. It is located just outside the little village of Sop Ruak where you can get good cheap Thai food while sitting by the river and ten kilometers from Chiang Saen where you can find ancient ruins and boats laden with fruit from China.
What's not to be missed?
Learning how to ride an elephant at the mahout training camp. Visiting the Royal palace and gardens at Doi Tung, the Chinese Kuomintang brigades on Doi Mae Salong, learning about the Akha at Ban Lorcha and exploring some of the other tribal minority villages in the surrounding mountains.
