As a destination for tourism Thailand has long been a favorite with the more adventurous western travelers but nowadays it can also claim to have some of the most luxurious hotels and resorts to be found anywhere in Asia. Thailand sits right in the centre of mainland South-East Asia bordering Myanmar to the east, Laos to the north, Cambodia to the west and Malaysia to the south. The north of the country is mainly mountainous while the central region is a vast fertile plain. In the south the country stretches for over a 1,000 kilometers down a narrow peninsula to the Malaysian border. The country’s capital and by far the largest city, is Bangkok, one of the major economic hubs of the region and gateway to the countries of Indochina and Myanmar. The second city, though much smaller than Bangkok, is Chiang Mai, a city of temples and a good base for exploring the north.
